Psychology of High Scores, Leaderboards, & Competition

Jamie Madigan’s overview of his presentation on player psychology, the Frog Pond Effect, and a little bit about the McKayla is Not Impressed meme.

This is a great intro into some of the psychological motivations within gameplay, including the insight that designing games that keep players in smaller pools of competitors generally keeps all participants more engaged—apparently, people don’t like being small frogs in big ponds.
